Project Update - Feb 21st, 2011
The Pierce Run project was finished...but is now in need of some modifications! Construction was completed in November of 2010, just before the arrival of the heavy fall rains. When the rain arrived, so did a complication in the project...the dam of the freshwater storage pond was leaking! Water was seeping under the dam, through a layer of sandy soil. Then the heavier rains arrived, bringing with it another issue...the primary overflow pipes were leaking, again, allowing water to seep through and erode the dam. These pipes were temporarily repaired, to allow water to flow through without damaging the dam. Both issues will be repaired by ODNR DMRM in 2011, then the slag bed will finally be able to fill and discharge, adding much needed alkalinity to Pierce Run! Thanks to all who attended the "post-construction tour" on November 23rd.

It's the beginning of the end at Pierce Run!!
With the steel slag bed formed and the resevoir dam
due for completion this week, it looks like this project
should be up and running before the snow falls.

Project Update December 16th, 2009
Pierce Run will be the home to many exciting new things in 2010! The Pierce Run AMD Remediation Project is scheduled for completion in the spring. Upon completion, the RCP, in conjunction with the Ohio University Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs, will hold a public tour at the project site to highlight the applied AMD treatment technologies. We will also begin our post construction chemical water sampling, followed by biological sampling upstream and downstream of the project. So...DON'T FORGET ABOUT US OVER THE WINTER! Remember to check back when the ground thaws for continued contruction updates!
Project Update October 30th, 2009
Mud, mud and more mud!
The Seals Construction crew has been forced to cease construction for the season due to the amount of rainfall that the project site has been receiving. Over the next several weeks, the crew will be winterizing the project (seeding / mulching exposed soil, removing equipment, erecting a gate), and hope to begin construction again in April. Project Update October 20th, 2009
Disking the Project Area
Due to the high amount of moisture in the project soils, the construction crew is disking the site. Hopefully, this will dry out the soil so that construction can continue through the fall. Click on the link below to see photos from 10/20/09.

Project Update October 7th, 2009
The Seals Construction crew has been making progress on the Pierce Run AMD Remediation Project! The project sign has been erected along State Route 160 at the access road to the site. Project features are also becoming visible; the pit that will soon be the steel slag bed has been dug, and the limestone lined plunge pool was being constructed on this day. Project Update February 2009
Pierce Run final design was submitted by ATC Associates on February 17th 2009. The proposed Wetland berms (2) in the wetland upstream of Radcliff were removed because of potential flood impacts to the township road and residence upstream of the wetland during a 100 year storm. This portion of the project may be pursued at a later date if additional grant funding becomes available.
Project Update January 2009
ATC Associates is in the final design stage of the Pierce Run AMD Remediation Project. The final design should be complete by March 13th, 2009. Bidding will begin in early spring, with construction scheduled to commence in the summer.

Pierce Run Tour October 23rd
Thanks to everyone who attended the Pierce Run site tour on October 23rd! About 15 interested citizens joined us at this future AMD Remediation Project site. Stops included the Oreton Seep and the Radcliff Wetland.
UPDATE!! 2008 Biological Sampling details can be found on the Project Monitoring Page, and fish sampling photos can be viewed on the 2008 Fish Sampling Photo Gallery!
Currently, the Pierce Run AMD Remediation Project is in the "Conceptual Design Phase." The Conceptual Design, outlined on the Project Overview page, has been developed by ATC Associates and the Raccoon Creek Partners. The final design should be completed by late fall of 2008.
Pre-construction monitoring is being conducted at the Oreton Seep site, along the mainstem of Pierce Run, and on the mainstem of Raccoon Creek, upstream and downstream of the mouth of Pierce Run. This data will be used as baseline data to document changes in water chemistry and biological comunities after the completion of the project. Details of Pierce Run Monitoring can be viewed on the Project Monitoring page. Also be sure to visit the Pierce Run Monitoring Photo Gallery for pictures of watershed staff in action!
